Stuart Speedway Opens Season #54

   Story by Josh Reynolds

Stuart, IA (May 17) – Mother Nature delayed the season opener by a week, and the excitement was through the roof as 95 cars packed the pits on a windy Sunday afternoon at Stuart Speedway! Close to 3 inches of rain fell on Saturday night, but the crew had the track and pits hammered down so the majority ran off into the new tile put in during the offseason. Everything worked great as you could hardly tell any rain had fallen! Jacob Reiter, Clint Luellen, Todd Shute, Corey Zeitner, Austin Luellen and Marcus Fagan were the winners on Casey’s General Store Night at the Races.
Once Feature time rolled around it was the IMCA Sport Compacts coming to the track with Jacob Peters and Jacob Reiter on the front row. Peters led lap one with Curtis Miller powering to the front to lead lap two. The lead was short lived as Miller went sideways in turn one and flipped violently after a tire went down. Miller was ok, but his night was over. Once the cleanup was done, Reiter took command and never looked back in taking the win. Dean Richards finished second, Alex Davis third, Peters fourth and Randy Rush completed the top five. Miller was the heat race winner.
IMCA Northern SportMods were up next with Dusty Masolini and Chase Rudolf pulling the top two chips out of the bucket. Masolini held the top spot for one lap until third starting Clint Luellen got by on lap two. A caution on lap eight slowed the field, and a spin on lap nine by Colton Nelson triggered a light rollover by Siraj Thompson that brought out the red flag. Those two cautions gave Jerry Hinton and Kendall Davis the opportunity to grab the second and third spots, and would set up a five lap dash to the finish. Luellen stayed true to the bottom of the track and went on to score the win. Hinton took second with Kody Havens sliding into third, Davis fourth and Masolini fifth. Luellen and Davis were the heat race winners.
Justin Zeitner and Todd Shute brought out the IMCA Modifieds next for their twenty lap feature, and it would be quite a show! Shute took the lead early with Zeitner and Todd VanEaton in tow. Shute would hold the lead through three cautions, and the fourth one came out when Luke Wanninger and Shute made contact in turn four and Shute came to a stop. Per track rules, Shute was given his spot back and Wanninger decided to retire to the pits. Once the cars fired back up, Shute went on to the win with Nick Roberts second, Zeitner third, VanEaton fourth and Shane Demey fifth. Shute, Roberts and Scott Bash were the heat race winners.
With weather looming to the west, the decision to move the IMCA Late Models up in the running order was made. Corey Zeitner and Dan Demey were the front row starters, and Zeitner took control early. Paul Nagle and Allen Zeitner took turns in second, but through four cautions Zeitner continued to lead. Curtis Glover moved into second on lap seventeen, and the last yellow would fly on lap eighteen. This set up a two lap dash, but that dash lasted just over a lap as Zeitner took the white flag and Glover drove under and spun out Zeitner in turn one. For the second race in a row, per track rules, Zeitner was given his spot back. Because the field had taken the white flag, Zeitner was declared the winner. Scotty Welsh came from his twelfth starting spot to take second with John Emerson third, Todd Cooney fourth and Nagle fifth. Corey Zeitner and Daulton Maassen were the heat race winners.
IMCA Hobby Stocks came out next with Jordan Peters and Austin Luellen pacing the field. Once the green flag waved the only thing stopping Luellen would be the checkered flag as he led the caution flag-free event from start to finish. Aaron Rudolph ran second for the entire race with John Watson taking third at the line by inches over Buck Schafroth while Shannon Anderson would take the fifth spot. Luellen, Watson and Anderson were the heat race winners.
Last up on the night would be the IMCA Stock Cars with Daniel Hilsabeck and Terry Pruitt leading the field to green. Hilsabeck held the lead over Marcus Fagan for the first four laps until the two hooked bumpers on the backstretch on lap five. That allowed Brian Blessington to sneak by and take the top spot. That would last until Hilsabeck recovered and ran down Blessington to take the lead back on lap eight. Fagan staged his own recovery and passed Blessington on lap ten and set his sights on Hilsabeck. The two would tangle once again on lap fourteen and Fagan came out on top a lap later. Hilsabeck slowed with a left rear flat as Fagan sped off to the win. Blessington finished second with Chris Pruitt close behind in third, Josh Daniels fourth and Casey Greubel fifth. Fagan and Chris Pruitt were the heat race winners.
We’d like to thank all who came out to support the race track at our first event of the year. Next week is the 15th annual Ron Little/Bones Memorial. We will honor two great men on this night, and with this being one of our crown jewels for the season you won’t want to miss it! We will have our regular classes along with Mod Lites. The Modifieds will be $1000 to win and that makes this race a Fastshafts All-Star Qualifier. See you then!
