Roberts and Luellen Double Down at Stuart Speedway

Stuart, IA (June 8) – For the first time since opening night, Stuart Speedway experienced decent weather……for the WHOLE NIGHT!!! Along with the cool, dry air was some of the best racing we’ve seen in 2014! Winners for the make-up features were Cody Cleghorn, Austin Luellen, Clint Luellen, Derrick Rohe and Nick Roberts. Jimmy May, Korbin Nourse, Cody Cleghorn, Shannon Anderson, Clint Luellen, Brian Blessington and Nick Roberts took the wins for the regular night on Night at the Races.
The first race of the night was the make-up feature for the 6 Cylinder FWD’s with Korbin Nourse and Jacob Reiter on the front row. Nourse led right away with Cody Cleghorn chasing him down. Contact in turn four gave the lead to Cleghorn on lap six and the 21ZC went on to the win. Nourse finished in second with Dean Richards third and Reiter fourth.
IMCA Northern SportMods came out next with Ty Luellen and Jerry Hinton showing the way. As the cars made their way around for the first lap, the 3L of Clint Luellen blasted into the lead with his brother Ty close behind. This race would go green for all fifteen laps, and Clint Luellen was strong all the way in picking up the win. Ty Luellen finished in second with Hinton third, Brandon Williams fourth and Kendall Davis fifth.
Derrick Rohe and Chris Pruitt led the IMCA Stock Cars to green next with Rohe leading Pruitt and Brian Blessington for the first two laps. Blessington moved into second on lap three and set his sights on the win, but Rohe was too strong and held on for the checkered flag in the second caution-free event in a row. Blessington finished second with Pruitt third, Marcus Fagan fourth and Nyle Godwin fifth.
IMCA Sport Compacts came out next with Jacob Reiter and Logan Richards on the front row. Fourth starting Cody Cleghorn took the point on lap one and never looked back in picking up his second win of the night. Dean Richards crossed in second with Logan Richards third and Reiter fourth.
Andy Hick and Dustin Lynch led the IMCA Hobby Stocks to green with Hick leading lap one. As the cars came around for lap two, carnage erupted coming out of turn four with Shannon Anderson getting turned around and Lynch was caught up, sending him hard into the outside wall. Anderson and Lynch were ok, but they would be done for this race with too much damage to continue. Once the cars were lined back up, Hick continued to lead with Jamie Schirm on his back bumper. Schirm stalked Hick, and on lap six capitalized on a bobble and took the lead. Austin Luellen moved into second on lap eight, and five laps later moved by Schirm to take the lead. Luellen would go on to take his first ever win at Stuart with Schirm second, Hick third, Eric Stanton fourth and Mike Pruitt fifth.
IMCA Modifieds were the last ones up for the make-up features with two rookies on the front row. Marcus Fagan and Nick Roberts led the field to the stripe with Roberts getting the advantage on lap one. Fagan followed behind until Luke Wanninger took over second on lap seven. Wanninger set out to track Roberts down and he would get close, but the third caution free race of the night belonged to Roberts. Wanninger settled for second with Devon Havlik third, Fagan fourth and Josh Gilman fifth.
After heat races for the regular night were complete, Ryan McCrory and Erin Turner brought out the Mod Lites for their regional Stars event. McCrory led lap one with Mike Morrill taking over on lap two. Three yellows and a red for Turner rolling hard in turn four slowed the race. Turner was ok, but would be done for the night. After the red, the field got it together and ran all the way to the end. Morrill looked to have the race in hand, but Jimmy May had another plan and moved up to take the lead on lap fifteen. May would go on to the win over Morrill, Charlie Brown, Joe Glick and Dusty Masolini. Masolini and Brown were the heat race winners.
6 Cylinder FWD’s came out next with Korbin Nourse and Dean Richards on the front row. Nourse took the lead and never looked back in picking up his first feature win. Richards was second with Cody Cleghorn third and Adam Petro fourth. Nourse cleaned up in taking the heat race win as well.
Arie Schouten and Kody Havens led the IMCA Northern SportMods to green next, and to no one’s surprise it was Clint Luellen parting the seas and taking the lead on lap one from the sixth starting spot. Havens hung in second until Ty Luellen got by on lap eight after two cautions slowed the field. After two more yellows on lap ten, the field was told that the next flag would end the race, and that’s exactly what happened on lap twelve when Havens went for a spin in turn two. Clint Luellen rounded up a perfect weekend that started with a win in Marshalltown, a cruiser win in Adel with Luke Wanninger, and a heat win along with two feature wins at Stuart. Congrats Clint! Ty Luellen crossed in second with Jerry Hinton third, Garrett Alexander fourth and Matt Hays fifth. Havens was the other heat race winner.
IMCA Stock Cars were up next with Cory Bushnell and Nyle Godwin on the front row. Bushnell was strong in taking the lead over Terry Pruitt until lap five when Chris Pruitt moved into second. That would last until lap nine when Chris Pruitt went for a spin in turn one. Once the cars got going again, Bushnell continued to lead over Brian Blessington with Terry Pruitt third. Chris Pruitt would move to the high side of the track and it paid off quick, moving him into second on lap thirteen and to the lead a lap later. Pruitt began to pull away, but a couple laps later started to move down the track. Bushnell and Blessington were side by side and reeling Pruitt in, and as the green flag was held high it was a three car race! Blessington moved into second before the white flag, and ducked low on the last lap under Pruitt to take the win by half a car length at the line! Pruitt finished in a disappointing second with Bushnell third, Marcus Fagan fourth and Terry Pruitt fifth. Bushnell and Chris Pruitt were the heat race winners.
Logan and Dean Richards brought the IMCA Sport Compact feature to life next with Logan leading lap one. Cody Cleghorn took over on lap two and ran away with this one, his third feature win of the night. Dean Richards took second with Jordan Androy third, Logan Richards fourth and Nolan Parker fifth. Cleghorn was also the heat race winner.
IMCA Modifieds took to the track next with Tony Hilgenberg and Rex Parkison on the front row. Parkison led the first two laps with make-up feature winner Nick Roberts taking the point on lap three. Roberts looked to run away with another one, but two cautions on lap twelve slowed the field and bunched up the cars behind the rookie. Luke Wanninger inherited second place on the restart and quickly made his way to the bumper of the 23JR. As the two started lap fifteen, Wanninger touched the back bumper of Roberts and sent him for a spin in turn two, bringing out the caution. By track rules, Roberts was given his spot back and Wanninger was sent to the tail. One more caution on lap seventeen for fluid on the track was the only thing slowing Roberts down as he went on to take his second feature win of the night. Josh Gilman finished second with Devon Havlik third, Wanninger recovering nicely in fourth and Marcus Fagan fifth. Gilman and Fagan were the heat race winners.
Andy Hick and Tyson Overton brought out our thirteenth and final feature for the night for the IMCA Hobby Stocks. Hick led lap one until the repaired Victory Chassis of Shannon Anderson took over on lap two. Hick and Jamie Schirm held down spots two and three until Hick went for a spin in turn four on lap ten. This set up a five lap shootout for the win, and Anderson was up to the challenge in taking the win. Schirm finished second with Mike Pruitt third, Eric Stanton fourth and Austin Luellen fifth. Schirm, Hick and Andrew Burg were the heat race winners.
We’d like to thank all who came out to support the race track at our fourth event of the year. Next week is the Stew Hansen Dodge Stock Car Shootout. Any Stock Car is eligible to show up for the draw/redraw and the $1000 to win! In addition to the Shootout we will have the rest of our regular classes. See you then!
