Cooney Keeps Perfect Record

Stuart, IA (July 8) – Mother Nature finally smiled down on Stuart Speedway Sunday afternoon – kind of. While it was still plenty warm, it was nothing compared to the recent blast of heat we’ve been experiencing. Regardless of the heat, people came together for yet another great night of racing as Deavon Richards, Ty Luellen, Jeremy Gettler, Luke Wanninger, Scott Bash, John Watson, Todd Cooney and Andy Forcht picked up wins on Adair Lumber Company Night at the Races.
After heat races the main events started with the IMCA Sport Compacts coming out with Jordan Peters and Deavon Richards on the front row. Richards had little resistance and led all the way to snag the win, his second in two starts at the track. Peters took second with Scott Brown third and Rachelle Brown fourth. Richards made it a clean sweep with the heat race win.
Joe Simbro and Casey Greubel brought out the IMCA Northern Sportmods next for their fifteen lap feature. Fourth starting Ty Luellen led right away with eighth starting Mike Pruitt right behind. Luellen held the top spot until a lap eleven caution bunched the field up to set up a four lap charge to the checkered flag. Once the green flag flew, point leader and ninth starting Nick Roberts passed Pruitt and set out to run down Luellen. As the white flag came out, Roberts was less than a car length behind Luellen and looked poised to steal the win away. Luellen had to be thinking of a week earlier when a lap car prevented him from a certain win, and maybe it was just that that pulled the 32 car out of turn 2 with a car length advantage over Roberts. Luellen held about a groove off the bottom while Roberts let it all hang out on the top side and as the cars came to the line it would be Luellen getting his first win of the year by less than a car length! Roberts took second with Ty’s brother Clint third, Pruitt fourth and David Schlicht fifth. Ty Luellen and Roberts were the heat race winners.
IMCA Stock Cars came out next with Derrick Rohe and Adam Hilgenberg showing the way. Rohe led early with Brian Blessington and Jeremy Gettler in tow. Gettler worked the top side and passed Blessington on lap nine while Rohe stretched his advantage on the bottom of the track. That advantage disappeared on lap eleven as the caution flag waved and tightened the field for what proved to be the last restart of the race. Rohe led one more lap until Gettler powered by to take the top spot on lap thirteen. Gettler set sail and would lead all the way to the checkered flag, his second of the year. Marcus Fagan finished in second with Nyle Godwin third, Jamie Schirm fourth and Rohe fifth. Scott Bailey, Godwin and Fagan were the heat race winners.
Ed Seibert and Scott Bash brought out the IMCA Modifieds next with Seibert showing the way for the first three laps. Bash moved by just before a lap four caution waved, and once the green was out the 14B stayed in front by utilizing the bottom side of the track. That lead would last until lap twelve when Luke Wanninger flew by around the outside of Bash. Wanninger looked unstoppable after a first lap tangle that sent him to the back of the pack, as he picked off a car a lap to take over the top spot and sail to his fourth feature win of the year. Now for those of you paying attention, I said above that Wanninger and Bash BOTH were feature winners, and that has to do with Wanninger running an experimental package for IMCA with a crate motor/spoiler/weight break. Because he is running that, any driver that finishes behind him technically finishes with the same points, so therefore Bash wins too, and that’s his first win at the track this year. That is the first time in my racing life that I saw TWO people win the same race! Finishing third, fourth and fifth but receiving points for second, third and fourth was Josh Gilman, Randy Havlik and Seibert. Wanninger and Devon Havlik were the heat race winners.
IMCA Hobby Stocks came out next with Chad LeGere and Nathan Lange on the front row. LeGere showed the way until John Watson moved by on lap nine. The only caution of the race came out with two laps to go, but there would be no drama in this one as Watson took the win, his second of the year. Austin Luellen won a great battle for second over LeGere with Brandon Pruitt fourth and Jamie Songer fifth. Watson and Pruitt were the heat race winners.
Next up would be the IMCA Late Models for the third installment of what I like to call the Late Model Summer Series at Stuart. Kevin Sather and Randy Faux sat on the front row with Sather taking the lead out of the gate. Sather held the lead comfortably over Faux until Todd Cooney moved into second on lap six. It took Cooney all of one quarter of a mile of clay to grab the lead from Sather, and that would be the show as Cooney held strong to take the win, his third in three starts at the speedway. Sather finished in second with Chad Cooney third, Darrell DeFrance fourth and Curt Schroeder fifth. DeFrance and Cooney were the heat race winners.
6 Cylinder FWD’s came out last for the night with Deavon Richards and Riley Songer setting the pace. Richards led right away with first Songer and then Andy Forcht trailing in second. Forcht, the heat race winner, made his move on lap five and went on to take his fourth win of the season over Richards, Songer and Jordan Peters.
We’d like to thank all who came out to support the race track on a gorgeous Sunday evening. Join us next week for Kinzie Service Night at the Races where you will see all of our normal classes with some of the best drivers the state of Iowa and the Midwest has to offer! See you there!
