Songer Gets First Win at Stuart Speedway

Stuart, IA (July 21) – Racers, fans and crews returned to Stuart Speedway under threatening skies, but left with the sun shining and a great night of racing to remember on First State Bank Night at the Races! Brian Haller, Mike Nichols, Ty Luellen, Jamie Songer, Luke Wanninger, Shawn Cooney and Todd Cooney were the feature winners on the evening.
IMCA Sport Compacts were first up with Brian Haller and Deavon Richards on the front row. Haller, the heat race winner, wasted little time in taking the lead with Shawn Cooney in second. Cooney would close the gap as the race wound down, but there was no stopping Haller as he took his first win of the season. Cooney crossed in second with Richards third and Brad Egenberger fourth.
Mike Nichols and Michael Walrod brought out the IMCA Stock Cars next for their twenty lap A main. Nichols took the top spot early with Walrod in second and Chris Pruitt third. Pruitt moved into second on lap eight, bringing Jeff Joldersma with him in third. Joldersma passed Pruitt for second on lap ten with Nichols leading by a large margin. The top three stayed the same until a lap sixteen caution bunched up the field and gave them one last shot at Nichols. As the green flag flew, Nichols powered away from the pack and went on to his second win at the Speedway this year with Joldersma second, fifteenth starting Jamie Schirm third, Pruitt fourth and Brian Blessington fifth. Nichols and Bryan Snell were the heat race winners.
IMCA Northern SportMods came out next with Jordan Peters and Arie Schouten at the front. Colby Oberembt led lap one with Ty Luellen making the pass for the lead on lap two. Nick Roberts found his way to second on lap three and set out to track down Luellen, but a lap seven caution erased the lead and bunched up the pack to make for a final dash to the checkered flag. Luellen held strong at the front, and after the cars took the white flag Roberts made his move on the bottom on the backstretch. As he pulled alongside Luellen, the caution flag flew for the spun car of Larry Embrey ending the race under the yellow checkered and making Luellen the winner for the fourth time this season. Roberts finished second with Cole Ferguson third, Clinton Luellen fourth and Matt Webb fifth. Oberembt and Clinton Luellen were the heat race winners.
Gina Greubel and Jeff Fink led the IMCA Hobby Stocks to green next with Jamie Songer taking the top spot on lap one. Andrew Burg followed Songer into second with Shannon Anderson getting past Greubel for third on lap seven. Burg drove as hard as he could, but there was no catching Songer in this caution free race as he went on to the win, his first at the track. Burg took second with Anderson third, Andy Coffman fourth and Austin Luellen fifth. Coffman and Songer were the heat race winners.
IMCA Modifieds were up next with Tony Hilgenberg and Josh Most on the front row. Most would take the lead with Luke Wanninger close behind in second. Wanninger made the pass for the lead on lap six with Josh Gilman moving into second on lap eleven. A lap fourteen caution for debris bunched up the field and gave Gilman and Most one last shot at Wanninger. Gilman gave it all he had on the top side, but Wanninger was too strong and went on to win number four of the season. Gilman finished second with Most third, Rex Parkison fourth and Scott Bash fifth. Wanninger made it a clean sweep with the heat race win.
Shawn Cooney and Brian Haller brought out the 6 Cylinder FWD’s next with Cooney taking the lead right away. Cory Sauerman gave chase with Andy Forcht close behind. As the cars took the white flag, Sauerman moved in for the pass, but Cooney was too fast and went on to the win, his first in the class. Sauerman finished second with Forcht third and Haller fourth. Haller was the heat race winner.
Last up on the track was the IMCA Late Models with Todd Cooney and Curt Schroeder on the front row. An early caution slowed the field, but once the cars took the green flag it was the #30 taking off and leaving the field. Darrel DeFrance came from the last row to take second on lap seven and set out to catch Cooney, but there would be no catching anyone as Cooney went on to his second win in two starts. DeFrance finished in second with Paul Glendenning third, Dylan Book fourth and Al Zeitner fifth. DeFrance and Zeitner were the heat race winners.
We’d like to thank all who came out to support the race track last night. Please join us next Sunday for Adair Lumber Company Night at the Races with the return of the Micro Sprints. Remember, there are no number fees for the rest of the season at Stuart so tell your friends and bring a car for some great side by side racing! See you then!
