Sobbing and Daniels Take Home the Bacon

Story by Josh Reynolds

Stuart, IA (July 3) – Extra money and extra nice weather welcomed racers to Stuart Speedway on the day before we celebrated our Independence. Josh Gilman (make-up and regular night), Adam Kralik, Jesse Sobbing, Bob Daniels, Jake Coughennower and Shannon Anderson were the feature winners on a beautiful Sunday evening.

The first race on the track was the make-up feature for the IMCA Modifieds due to the severe weather the previous week. Ron and Scott Bash made up the front row as the cars roared under the green flag. Yellow would wave quickly for Rex Parkison after contact with R. Bash ended with Parkison up against the turn two wall. When the race continued, Josh Gilman gained control and refused to let go, leading all the way to the checkered flag. Kent Croskey finished in second, Randy Havlik third, Alison Quick fourth and S. Bash fifth.

Once the heats were over the IMCA Sport Compacts came out with Jordan Peters and Adam Kralik on the front row. Kralik took control and led the distance for the win followed by Peters and Mark McCoy. Kralik also won the heat race.

IMCA Northern Sportmods had a larger purse on the line this night, with the money coming in memory of a great dirt track fan that went by the nickname Deadhead. Jim Irvin frequented many short tracks in his day and was mapping out his IMCA Supernationals plans last August when he suddenly passed away. He’s remembered by many, but Doug and Ellen Weiss chose to honor Jim by increasing the Sportmod purse on Sunday. This brought out a few new cars to the Speedway and one of them, Jesse Sobbing, drew the pole for the feature. Sobbing and Jerry Hinton brought the field to life for the twenty lap race with Sobbing taking over right away. One of Deadhead’s favorite drivers, Clinton Luellen, gave chase to Sobbing through four caution flags. After the last one on lap fourteen, Luellen tried to take advantage and pass for the lead, but Sobbing would not be denied and after winning the feature, he donated his trophy to a young man in the grandstands! Luellen came in second with Mike Pruitt third, Ty Luellen fourth and Hinton fifth. Pruitt and Sobbing were the heat race winners.

Jamie Schirm and Marcus Fagan brought out the IMCA Stock Cars next for their twenty lap race. The purse for this race was also increased with announcer and avid Stock Car fan Chris Uren and Hawkeye Auto Salvage owner and Stock Car driver Michael “Wombat” Walrod donating the extra money. Schirm and Fagan led the cars to green but it would be fourth starting Bob Daniels leading lap number one. Through two cautions Daniels held on to the lead with Schirm and later Mike Nichols chasing hard in second. Nichols showed Daniels the fender a few times on the top side, but Daniels held steady on the bottom and for the first time this year he took the feature win. Ninth starting Bryan Snell snuck by for second on the last lap with Nichols finishing a disappointing third. Schirm and Fagan rounded out the top five with Fagan and Jeff Anderson winning the heat races.

6 Cylinder FWD’s were next up with Jordan Peters and Jake Coughennower on the front row. Coughennower took charge from the start and led all the way to the finish. Jim Britton finished second with Andy Forcht, Peters and Mark McCoy finishing out the top five. Britton was the heat race winner.

Nathan Lange and Nyle Godwin brought the IMCA Hobby Stocks to the green flag with third starting Shannon Anderson leading the first lap. Two quick cautions bunched the field up and brought Curt Ganoe up close behind Anderson. When the race restarted, Anderson took off and built a sizeable lead. Around lap ten Ganoe began to run down Anderson and as the cars came to the white flag, Ganoe stuck a nose under the 78 car. Anderson held steady, however, and pulled away a bit to pick up the win and he would be the second person to give his trophy to a lucky young man! Ganoe held on to second, Brandon Pruitt finished third, Godwin fourth and Jason Kohl fifth. Godwin and Anderson were the heat race winners and Kohl was the Trophy Dash winner.

Last but not least, the IMCA Modifieds came out for the second time with Rex Parkison and Kent Croskey on the front row. Croskey led the first lap, but as happened in the make-up feature Josh Gilman took over the top spot and looked to fly to the checkers on the top side. Gilman soon realized that the top wasn’t going to cut it as Alison Quick powered under Gilman to almost take the lead. Having just enough room to do it, Gilman moved down in front of Quick and soon built his lead back up. After a couple of yellows, Gilman rode off into the sunset to take his second feature win of the night. Quick held on for second, Parkison finished third, Croskey fourth and Dave Farren Jr. fifth. Parkison and Gilman were the heat race winners.

Thanks to all who came out and supported the track on Sunday. We continue to try to improve everything about Stuart Speedway and none of it would be possible without great fans and drivers like you! Please join us next week for Horizon Financial/Zipps Photos.Com Night at the Races!
