Luellen Wins Bones Memorial

Story by Josh Reynolds
Stuart, IA (August 10) – The IMCA Northern SportMods were missing their roofs, but none of their speed as they put on an AWESOME display of driving! Clint Luellen came out on top of the Bones Memorial Topless SportMod feature and Charlie McKenna, Mike Morrill, Brian Blessington, Jacob Reiter, Cole Ferguson, Andy Forcht and Austin Luellen were the winners on Hawkeye Auto Salvage Night at the Races.
IMCA Late Models were first up at feature time with Bill Crimmins and Curtis Glover on the front row. Crimmins would lead over Glover and then Charlie McKenna until a lap 5 caution for Crimmins slowed the field. McKenna inherited the lead and took off like a rocket with Todd Cooney and Randy Foote in tow. Cooney threw the book at McKenna, drawing alongside a few times, but McKenna was too strong and went on to take the win. Cooney finished in second with Foote third, Randy Faux fourth and Vic Lovejoy fifth. Foote and McKenna were the heat race winners. Cooney was name the Track Champion by four points over McKenna.
MADCRA Mod Lites were up next with Mike Morrill and Charlie Brown leading the field to green. Morrill would be unchallenged in this race, leading all fifteen laps and taking the win. Brown finished second with Travis Stensland third, Jimmy May fourth and Joe Glick fifth. Morrill cleaned up, winning the heat race as well.
Marcus Fagan and Brian Blessington brought the IMCA Stock Cars to the track next with Fagan taking charge and leading through lap seven. Blessington made a run on the bottom side and took the point on lap eight. Fagan gave it all he had, but this night belonged to Blessington as he took home his 200th win in the Stock Car class. Fagan and Norm Belew finished second and third with Blessington also taking the heat race win.
IMCA Sport Compacts came out next with Jacob Reiter and Brandon Patava on the front row. Reiter took control and went on to the easy win. Patava and Cody Cleghorn rounded out the field with Cleghorn the heat race winner.
Rex Parkison and Ron Bash brought the IMCA Modified to the speedway next with Parkison leading the first three laps. Jake Durbin took the lead on lap four and Cole Ferguson took the top spot away on lap five. Josh Gilman moved into second the next time around and set out to track down Ferguson. As lap traffic came into play, Gilman began to close in on the lead. As the cars took the white flag the lead was down to a car length, and Gilman drove in hard on the bottom. Coming out of turn four Ferguson moved up beside a lap car and got the win by about a half a car length over Gilman! Nick Roberts finished third with Durbin fourth and Todd VanEaton fifth. Devon Havlik and Ferguson were the heat race winners.
Outlaw FWD’s were up next with Andy Forcht and Korbin Nourse on the front row. Forcht would lead all eight laps and cruise to the feature win. Nourse finished second with Cody Cleghorn third and Veronica Patava fourth. Nourse was the heat race winner.
Troy Phillips and Ryan Wells led the IMCA Hobby Stocks to green next with Phillips leading lap one. Jeremy Auten moved to the front for the next two laps until Shannon Anderson passed him for the lead on lap four. Anderson held strong at the front over Austin Luellen, but as the laps wound down the 3A found speed at the top of the track and began to close in on the lead. Luellen made his move on lap twelve, took the lead and went on to take the feature win. Jamie Schirm took second from Anderson on the last lap after being involved in a lap two skirmish and restarting in the back. Anderson was third with Auten fourth and Jacob Keiser fifth. Schirm, Luellen and Anderson were the heat race winners.
Last up for the night was the 1st Annual Bones Memorial for the IMCA Northern SportMods. The drivers voted a few weeks ago and decided to have this be a “topless” event where they had to remove their roofs and sail panels. To say that it was a unique look when the cars took to the track would be an understatement! This race paid tribute to our fallen official Richard “Bones” Welch. Bones would have been happy to see the field of drivers as well as the great track that they got to race on! Josh Sink and Chase Rudolf got the lucky draw and led the field to green with Jenae Gustin coming through to lead lap one. Gustin would hold the top spot till Clint Luellen passed her on lap four. Luellen would hold the lead through three cautions, but Gustin took the lead on lap nineteen. Luellen came around to take it back a lap later, and one final caution flew for debris on lap twenty three. This set up a mad dash to the checkered flag and it was taken by Luellen! Gustin came home second with Taylor Musselman third, Jerry Hinton fourth and Rudolf fifth. Hinton, Havens and Luellen were the heat race winners.
We’d like to thank all who came out to support the race track at our tenth event of the year. Next week is Plowman/Stanley Trenching Night at the Races. It will be our Season Championship with all classes lining up by their total points accumulated for the year. We will also have a King of the Hill race for the class that has the most cars and two powder puff races!  See you then!
