Stuart Speedway Names Track Champions
Stuart, IA (August 25) – Fans, drivers and crews found the hottest weather of the season on night 14 at Stuart Speedway, but the action proved even hotter with some of the best racing seen all year! Shawn Cooney, Jason Murray, Ty Luellen, Jeremy Auten, Cory Sauerman and Brian Blessington were the winners on Plowman & Stanley Trenching Season Championships. Track Champions for season number 52 are Shawn Cooney, Josh Gilman, Clint Luellen, Shannon Anderson, Andy Forcht and Marcus Fagan.
First up for the evening was the IMCA Sport Compacts with Logan Richards and Shawn Cooney on the front row. Just like when he won the heat, Cooney was dominant in taking the feature win. Cory Flanigan was second with Richards third and Dean Richards fourth. Cooney finished with a 170 point advantage over Deavon Richards for his first title at the speedway.
Ron Bash and Tony Hilgenberg brought out the IMCA Modifieds next with fifth starting Jason Murray surviving a first lap yellow to take the lead on lap one. As Murray continued to lead, National Points hunting Jesse Sobbing moved into second and started to track down the lead. Josh Gilman would take advantage of the top side of the track and moved past Sobbing on lap eight. As the race wound down, it was clear that Murray, Gilman or Sobbing would win the race, but which one was still up in the air! Gilman moved alongside Murray with Sobbing closing on the top side, but Murray, who hadn’t experienced a feature win since 2008, stayed strong and steady at the front and went on to the win. Gilman finished second with Sobbing third, Jeff James fourth and Rex Parkison fifth. Parkison and Gilman were the heat race winners. Gilman capped the season with a 42 point lead over Scott Bash to pick up his fifth track title at SIS.
IMCA Northern SportMods came out next with Jerry Hinton and Colby Oberembt on the front row. Hinton led until a lap three caution slowed the field and brought up Ty Luellen and Steve Reetz to his bumper. When the green flew, so did Luellen as he took the lead with Nick Roberts and Hinton in tow. Luellen and Roberts separated themselves from the field a bit and set up a shootout for the win. Roberts stayed close, but Luellen was strong all the way through the green, white and checkered flags to pick up the win. Roberts finished second with Clint Luellen third, Hinton fourth and Matt Webb fifth. Webb and Oberembt were the heat race winners. Clint Luellen picked up his second track title at Stuart with a 10 point advantage over Cole Ferguson and Webb.
Riley Songer and Gina Greubel brought the IMCA Hobby Stocks out next for their fifteen lap feature. Jeff Fink led the first three laps until Austin Luellen took over on the top side of the track. Luellen looked to sail to his first win of the year when his axle broke on lap seven, sending him into the wall in turn two and ending his night. That handed the lead over to Jeremy Auten, and he held strong with Brandon Pruitt hot on his heels. A caution for a spun car on lap thirteen set up a green-white-checkered finish and the crowd was on the edge of their seats! Pruitt went high and low, but it was not to be as Auten picked up the feature win. Pruitt finished second with Kenny Champ third, Jamie Songer fourth and Chad LeGere fifth. Fink and Auten were the heat race winners. Shannon Anderson was named the track champion for the third time, and even though he didn’t race he ended with a 3 point lead over Jamie Songer.
6 Cylinder FWD’s came out next with Dean Richards and Cory Sauerman on the front row. Just as he did in the heat race, Sauerman led all the way to pick up the win. Colton Nelson finished second with Flanigan third and Richards fourth. Andy Forcht is the track champion for the second time in as many seasons. Like Shannon Anderson he ended with a 2 point advantage over Sauerman without racing on the final night.
Last up for feature races was the IMCA Stock Cars with Doug Seidl and Michael Walrod leading the field to green. This class had the smallest margin for the point race with Marcus Fagan leading Jeff Joldersma by 2 points coming into the night. Seidl led early with first Bryan Snell and then Brian Blessington in second. A caution on lap seven doubled up the field behind Seidl, but it had little effect as the #27S continued to lead. Blessington closed the gap and took over the lead as the caution came out for debris on lap thirteen. Three laps later the point race would end as Joldersma was black flagged for spinning out Nyle Godwin on the front stretch. That caution would be the last and when the cars took the green it was all Blessington as he went on to the win. Jamie Schirm was second with Seidl third, Fagan fourth and Jeff Anderson fifth. Seidl and Anderson were the heat race winners. Fagan ended with a 10 point lead over Blessington with Joldersma slipping to third, 11 points back. This was Fagan’s second track title at the speedway.
The last events for the evening were two powder-puff races. Modifieds and SportMods were place together along with Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks. Carol Bash won in her husband Ron’s Modified and Bailey Godwin came out on top in her boyfriend Brandon Pruitt’s Hobby Stock over her mom Tina in her husband Nyle’s Stock Car. Sarah Parkison in her dad Rex’s modified and Sarah Kuehl in Jamie Songer’s Hobby Stock were the other competitors. Good job ladies!
We’d like to thank all who came out to support the race track last night and all season long as well. Please join us for the second annual Night before the Nationals presented by Kinzie Service. This will be our last event for 2013 with Stock Cars and Modifieds battling for $1000 to win, and they will be joined by the Mod Lites and Micro Sprints. See you then!
