Watson Wins Wetzel Memorial

Story by Josh Reynolds
Stuart, IA (July 19) – John Watson was the big winner on a beautiful evening for racing at Stuart Speedway. Clint Luellen, Curtis Miller, Brian Blessington and Nick Roberts also took home the hardware on Jirak Plumbing Night at the Races.
IMCA Northern SportMods took to the track first with Kendall Davis and Shawn Cooney on the front row. Cooney didn’t make it past turn one as his car went straight into the wall as the cars took the green flag. Cooney was ok, but his car wasn’t as lucky and would be retired for the night. When the cars lined back up Clint Luellen took advantage of Cooney’s misfortune and roared away from the pack, leading all fifteen laps and taking the feature win. Jerry Hinton finished second, Dusty Masolini third, Kendall Davis fourth and Kody Havens fifth. Luellen was also the heat race winner.
Ralph Bunce and Curtis Miller were on the front row for the IMCA Sport Compacts, and Miller stole the show as he went on to lead all the laps and take the win. Jacob Reiter finished second with Jacob Peters third, Jacob Mertz fourth and Bunce fifth. Miller was also the heat race winner.
IMCA Stock Cars came out next with Bryan Snell and Clay Mercer at the point. Mercer used the top side and would lead early over Snell and Brandon Pruitt. Brian Blessington moved to third on lap five, and second a lap later. As Blessington was working toward the leader, Josh Daniels was on the move from his seventh starting spot to third on lap eight. Blessington took over the lead on lap eleven and went on to the caution free win. Mercer came home second with Daniels third, Pruitt fourth and Snell third. Daniels and Derrick Rohe were the heat race winners.
Bob Daniels and Matt Webb brought the IMCA Modifieds out next with Webb leading over Todd VanEaton and Jeff Joldersma on lap one. Nick Roberts made it to third on lap four, second on lap five and all the way to the lead on lap six. While Roberts stretched his legs out front, Webb and VanEaton put on a spirited battle for second with Joldersma, Josh Gilman and Luke Wanninger racing hard for fourth. None, however, were able to make up any ground on Roberts as he went on to the win. Webb finished second with VanEaton third, Joldersma fourth and Wanninger fifth. Roberts and VanEaton were the heat race winners.
After Andrew Burg, John Watson, Austin Luellen and Shannon Anderson won their heat races and Jordan Peters won the B-Main, Watson and Nebraska racer Shawn Slezak brought the IMCA Hobby Stocks out for the John Wetzel Memorial. With $1000 on the line to win and a great payout all the way down, this race is always a favorite at SIS, and these guys were ready to put on a show! Watson led early over Buck Schafroth and Anderson with Eric Stanton and Luellen trucking to the front. Matt Tiernan came to rest on top of the turn two wall to bring out the yellow on lap 4, and a trio of cars came to a stop on the front stretch on lap six. Watson would continue to lead through these, and as the cars came to lap eight Schafroth drove under Watson and spun in turn one. The cars would continue, but Schafroth came to a stop in turn four to bring out the yellow again. This would be the last caution of the event as Watson picked up where he left off and remained in the lead over Anderson, Luellen and Stanton. Fifteenth starting Bill Bonnett made it to fourth on lap eighteen as the top three stayed the same. Anderson made his move on lap twenty three, heading up to the top side of the track and setting up a last lap effort for the win. As Watson and Anderson came out of two on the last lap, Anderson dove low looking to slide up but Watson was too strong and stayed up top to take the win. Anderson settled for second with Luellen third, Bonnett fourth and Jamie Songer fifth.
We’d like to thank all who came out to support the race track at our ninth event of the year.  We will be taking July 26th off.  Our next race will be Farm Boy Bodies/Luellen Farms Night at the Races on August 2nd. We will have our 5 regular IMCA classes and the IMCA Late Models will be back in town! See you then!
