Luellen Doubles Down
Story by Josh Reynolds
Stuart, IA (August 23) – Austin Luellen tamed not one but TWO classes Sunday night at Stuart Speedway. Frank Galusha, Cody Cleghorn, Brandon Pruitt, Nick Roberts and John Emerson were the rest of the winners on Karl Chevrolet Night at the Races.
Skylar Hunter and Sam Platt brought out the Micro Sprints first, and Hunter was the leader on lap one. Jake Galusha led the next two laps until Frank Galusha took over on lap four. The Galushas ran 1-2 the rest of the race, and Frank would go on to take the feature win. Jake finished second with Hunter third, Travis Rewerts fourth and Ryan Mills fifth. Frank Galusha was also the heat race winner.
IMCA Sport Compacts were up next with Curtis Miller and Cody Cleghorn on the front row. Cleghorn led lap one as Jacob Reiter came to a stop in turn three to bring out the yellow. Once the cars fired back up Cleghorn sailed off into the sunset to take the win. Reiter finished second with Jason Kroeger third, Terry Romick fourth and Miller fifth. Cleghorn was also the heat race winner.
Brett Vanderheiden and DJ Robinson brought out the IMCA Northern SportMods next with Vanderheiden leading lap one. Austin Luellen took over on lap two and his brother Clint passed Shawn Cooney for second on lap three. For the next twelve laps the Luellen brothers stole the show with Clint working high and low, pulling alongside Austin time after time. Try as he may, Austin held the top line around the track and went on to the win. Clint finished second with Jerry Hinton third, Cooney fourth and Kody Havens fifth. Dusty Masolini and Cooney were the heat race winners.
IMCA Stock Cars came out next with Bryan Snell and Chris Pruitt leading the field to green. Snell led the first four laps until Brandon Pruitt took the lead on lap five. Marcus Fagan made it to second on lap ten, but there was no stopping Pruitt as he went on to take the win. Fagan finished second with Snell third, Josh Daniels fourth and Chris Pruitt fifth. Brian Blessington and Daniels were the heat race winners.
Jason Day and Korbin Nourse brought out the IMCA Hobby Stocks next with Nourse leading lap one. Nourse would lead through a mess of five cautions in the first four laps, but sneaking up through the field was Austin Luellen as he made it to second on lap four. Luellen made the pass on lap six and, with a SportMod win already under his belt, looked to take the hardware in a second class. One last yellow on lap eleven slowed the field, but no one was stopping Luellen as he went on to take his second win of the night. Nourse held on for second with Buck Schafroth third, Watson fourth and Aaron Rudolph fifth. Day and Watson were the heat race winners.
IMCA Modifieds came out next with Bob Daniels and Matt Webb on the front row. Webb led lap one with Jeff James coming through to lead on lap two. James would show the way as Nick Roberts made his way through the field to second on lap seven. Roberts took the lead just before the yellow came out on lap twelve. Roberts led through one more yellow and went on to take the win. Josh Gilman finished second with James third, Adam Larson fourth and Jake Murray fifth. Roberts and Webb were the heat race winners.
Last up for the night was the IMCA Late Models with Randy Faux and Paul Conrad on the front row. Faux led the first seven laps when the yellow flew for a three car melee on the front stretch. Once the green flew, so did John Emerson as he took over the top spot. Todd Cooney made it to second on lap eleven and looked to track down Emerson, but no one was stopping the #87 on this night as he went on to take the win. Cooney finished second with Faux third, Darrel DeFrance fourth and Paul Nagle fifth. Allen Zeitner and Cooney were the heat race winners. Cooney picked up the track championship by five points over Emerson. Congratulations Todd!
Next week will be Plowman/Stanley Trenching Season Championship night. Our five regular classes will battle it out and we will name our Season Champions for 2015! See you then!
