Stuart, Iowa (July 11) - The skies finally smiled on Stuart Speedway as Jake Strayer, Tim Bengard, Randy Havlik, Brandon Pruitt, Cory Flanigan and Jeff Kruse took home the hardware. Bengard, Havlik and Pruitt picked up their second wins and Strayer, Flanigan and Kruse notched their first wins of the season.
After two long weeks off due to mother nature, the night kicked off with the IMCA Northern Sport Mods on track. Nick Roberts led lap number one from his outside row one starting spot, but it would be pole sitter Jake Strayer's night as he led the last fourteen laps in picking up the win. Dylan Book came home a strong second followed by Clinton Luellen, Jamie Schirm and Roberts. Heat winners were Mike Pruitt and Strayer.
Next up would be "The Class Too Tough To Tame", the IMCA Stock Cars, and their twenty lap feature, and what a feature it was! Tim Feltner looked strong from his outside front row starting spot, battling with pole sitter Jeremy Gettler before finally securing the lead on lap four. Meanwhile, eighth-starting Tim Bengard was making up ground. As Bengard settled into second place, Feltner appeared to have things in hand. His lead, however, would vanish as Bengard found a groove that worked well and brought him up to Feltner's back bumper. That set up a dash for the checkered flag that had most of the crowd on the edge of their seats! After a little fender bending, Feltner held the lead down low coming out of turn four on the last lap, but Bengard's momentum on the high side carried him to a close victory at the line. Feltner would come home a disappointing second chased by Brian Blessington, Bob Daniels and Steve Campbell. Heat winners were Gettler and Daniels. Feltner didn't go home competely empty-handed, though, as he picked up the trophy dash win.
The IMCA Modifieds would take the stage next with Jake George starting on the pole after David Groenhoff, Jr. didn't answer the call. Randy Havlik wasted little time getting to the front from the seventh starting spot as he led by lap four. That would pretty much write the ending for this race as Havlik dominated the rest of the way to pick up the win in his aptly named Victory Chassis. Kent Croskey came home an impressive second followed by Josh Gilman, Rex Parkison and Scott Bash. Heat winners were Havlik and Parkison.
IMCA Sport Compacts were up next with Garrett Nelson on the pole. Nelson would lead the first lap, but that was all as Cory Flanigan took over the point and led the rest of the way to pick up the feature win. Flanigan was followed by David Archibald, Nelson and Mike Nehring. The heat winner was Flanigan.
Steve Amos led the first lap of the IMCA Hobby Stock feature only to be taken over by Aaron Rudolph. Rudolph led a total of twelve laps, but that dominance would end in some controversy. A lap eleven caution bunched the field up with point leader John Watson moving into second place. Rudolph and J. Watson had some incidental contact for a lap followed by a hard run-in on the front straightaway on lap thirteen. The contact almost rolled Rudolph and ended his night, and J. Watson was given a two-spot penalty for rough driving. This handed over the lead to Brandon Pruitt, who went on to grab the feature win. J. Watson would finish less than a car-length behind in second place followed by a fine run by Nate Lange. Andrew Burg finished fourth and after spinning out on the first lap Danny Watson recovered nicely to cross the line in fifth. Pruitt and J. Watson were the heat winners.
Making their second-ever appearance at the track, the 6 cylinder FWD's were last up with Mike Powell on the pole. After a first-lap melee where the U81 of Christina Powell flipped on the backstretch, ninth-starting Cory Flanigan led nine of the scheduled ten laps. He didn't, however, lead the most important one as Jeff Kruse made the last lap pass on Flanigan to snag the win. Flanigan hung on for second followed by Taylor Musselman, Andy Miller and Casey Tucker.Tim Ratcliff and Musselman won their respective heats. It should be noted that Flanigan was driving his IMCA Sport Compact in the 6 cylinder race and was very competitive to say the least!
We hope to see you next week for Sprayer Specialties Night at the Races. IMCA Modifieds, Stock Cars, Northern Sport Mods, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts along with the ever-growing 6 Cylinder FWD's will be on the bill so join us for some good old-fashioned dirt track racing!
