Ayers Gets First Career Win

Story by Josh Reynolds

Stuart, IA (May 25) – Lightning in the sky and thunder on the track marked night number two of the 2018 season at Stuart Speedway. Austin Luellen, Adam Ayers, Curtis Miller, Brandon Pruitt and Ricky Thornton Jr. picked up the wins on Karl Chevrolet Night at the Races.

IMCA Northern SportMods started off the action with Brandon Patava and Hunter Longnecker on the front row. Longnecker held the lead early over Patava on lap one with last week’s winner, Austin Luellen, moving to second on lap two. Longnecker did everything right for five laps, but lap six saw a bit of a bobble from the leader and Luellen was there to pounce on the opportunity and took over the lead. A couple of quick cautions would be the only thing to slow the 3A down on this night as Luellen went on to take the win. Matt Webb took advantage of the cautions to give himself a second place finish, Colton Nelson crossed in third with Longnecker and Chase Rudolf rounding out the top five. Nelson and Webb were the heat race winners.

Adam Ayers and Jack Phillips brought the IMCA Hobby Stocks to the green flag next with Ayers getting the jump to lead over Phillips and Matt McAtee on lap one. McAtee got past Phillips on lap two with Jeremy Purdy making it to third a lap later. The top three stayed the same until the field was brought to a stop on lap eight as Solomon Bennett got into the turn one wall and rolled over onto his roof. Bennett was ok, but his night would be over. Once the green came back out it didn’t last long as second place McAtee put his car up and over the turn two wall and went all the way to the bottom of the embankment. Like Bennett, McAtee was ok but his night would end as well. With the time limit looming, the last five laps were ran without incident as Ayers would pick up his first career win in the Hobby Stocks! Purdy finished second with Brandon Cox third, Phillips fourth and Korbin Nourse fifth. Phillips and Ayers were the heat race winners.

IMCA Sport Compacts came out next with Kolby Sabin and Joseph Mastin on the front row. Sabin led lap one with Curtis Miller taking over on lap two. Last week’s winner after a disqualification moved him to the top spot left nothing on the table this week as he led Sabin and Dean Richards over the last eleven laps to take the win. Sabin, Richards, Bobby Key and Cullen Gossage rounded out the top five with Mastin and Miller the heat race winners.

Brandon and Chris Pruitt brought the IMCA Stock Cars alive with Brandon taking control early. B. Pruitt led C. Pruitt, Josh Daniels and Marcus Fagan in that order until Andrew Knode spun in turn four on lap ten to slow the field. When the green came back out it was B. Pruitt and C. Pruitt moving away from Daniels and Fagan, and as the laps wound down the 22 was closing in on the 10B. When the leaders took the white flag they were less than a car length apart, and coming out of turn four C. Pruitt turned under B. Pruitt, but the 10B got the win by about a car length at the line. C. Pruitt finished second with Daniels third, Fagan fourth and Ty Hill fifth. B. Pruitt cleaned up as he was the heat race winner as well.

IMCA Modifieds were the last feature on the track with Cory Sauerman and Scott Bash on the front row. Sauerman led the first two laps over Nick Roberts and Matthew Meinecke. Roberts and Meinecke both passed Sauerman on lap three as Roberts looked to make it a runaway. That would come to an end on lap twelve as Roberts’ left rear went down and he spun to bring out the yellow. Ricky Thornton Jr. was the beneficiary of that spin as he and Clint Luellen set themselves up to battle it out to the end. Luellen stayed close, but it was Thornton Jr. taking the win. Luellen finished second with Meinecke third, Josh Gilman fourth and Josh May fifth. Roberts was the heat race winner.

We’d like to thank all who came out to support the race track at our second event of the year. Next week will be Roy Sargent Buildings Night at the Races with our five regular classes in attendance.. See you then!
